Diagnosis based on external morphology (Xue et al, 2024). Best confirmed by comparing genitalia. 
Purpurata plagiatalis: Postmedial line of forewing punctiform between M2 and CuA2
Purpurata iopasalis: Postmedial line of forewing dentate or linear between M2 and CuA2. Postmedial line of hindwing punctiform between M2 and CuA2. 
Purpurata shompen: Postmedial line of forewing dentate or linear between M2 and CuA2. Postmedial line of hindwing linear between M2 and CuA2.
Purpurata directa: Postmedial line of forewing dentate or linear between M2 and CuA2. Postmedial line of forewing linear between M2 and CuA2.
