Pygospila tyres is a similar species.
Pygospila costiflexalis is cupreous-brown intead of shiny black. FW with the sub-basal line and a spot above it, near base, fulvous. Paired spots beyond cell and towards apex are separated, unlike P. tyres, where they are conjoined. Only two fulvous marginal spots above tornus (three white spots in P. tyres). HW spot above cell, absent. Male has a prominently flexed (indentated) costa, which is diagnostic.
